Fusion splicing is the process of joining two optical fibers using an electric arc to melt their cores together. Achieving a low-loss splice (ideally less than 0.02 dB) is critical to maintaining a healthy optical power budget in long-haul telecom networks.
Contaminants like dust, oils, or moisture on the fiber cladding can scatter laser light, creating high insertion loss. Precise cleaving angles and proper core alignment are equally crucial.
